5G Advanced Enhanced Security Phase 2

3GPP Release 18 (Rel-18) includes enhancements to the security aspects of 5G networks, including what is known as "5G Advanced Release 18 enhanced security phase 2." This phase is focused on further strengthening the security features and protocols of 5G networks to address emerging threats and vulnerabilities. Some potential areas of emphasis for the enhanced security phase 2 in 5G Advanced Release 18 may include:

1. Quantum-Safe Cryptography: Given the potential future threat posed by quantum computing to traditional cryptographic algorithms, there is a growing emphasis on developing and standardizing quantum-safe cryptographic solutions to protect 5G communications from potential attacks leveraging quantum computing capabilities.

2. Network Slicing Security: As 5G networks increasingly support network slicing to enable the provision of diverse services with varying requirements, enhancing security mechanisms specific to network slicing to ensure isolation, integrity, and confidentiality of traffic and resources within different slices is a key focus.

3. Threat Intelligence and Information Sharing: The development of mechanisms and protocols to facilitate effective threat intelligence sharing and collaboration among 5G network operators, enabling the rapid dissemination of information related to emerging security threats and vulnerabilities to enhanc
e proactive defense measures.

4. Enhanced Authentication and Access Control: Further improvements to authentication and access control mechanisms within 5G networks, potentially including the adoption of more robust and efficient authentication methods, such as multi-factor authentication and biometric authentication, to strengthen user and device identity verification.

5. Security for Edge Computing and Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC): Given the increasing deployment of edge computing and MEC in 5G networks, there is a need for enhanced security measures tailored to the unique characteristics and distributed nature of edge environments, ensuring the protection of sensitive data and applications at the network edge.
